Juanes was originally married to Jeanne Uhalt from the house of Martinea in Les Aldudes and they had two daughters Catherine and Jeanne. After the death of his first wife, he left his young daughters with relatives and went to California to herd sheep primarily in the Bakersfield area. After a visit to the Basque country in 1902, he was heading west on a train when he met Patsy Healy, owner of the Patterson-Healy sheep company in Buffalo, Wyoming. He was convinced to exit the train in Buffalo and became the first Basque in Buffalo. He summoned his brother Jean Baptiste (Manech) and later his cousins Pete and Simon Harriet from Arneguy, France. Juanes worked for a few years in Buffalo and saw the two Harriet brothers marry his two daughters. In 1909, he returned to France, remarried to Catherine Iriart and had another daughter, Marianne.
