Biscailuz, Martin Obituary 1899

As posted in the Los Angeles Times, Jun 23, 1899:

Erractic Attorney Died Yesterday at the County Hospital

Martin V. Biscailuz, the erratic Basque attorney, died at 7:45 o'clock yesterday morning at

the County Hospital.

Biscailuz was well known to the old-timers of Los Angeles, and was at one time a prominent

member of the Los Angeles bar. He was in prosperous circumstances, and about eight years

ago received a fee, said to have been in the neighborhood of $36,000 from the estate of a

deceased Frenchman.

After this Biscailuz went to Europe, and on his return started on a course of riotous living, which

continued until his fortune was swept away, and his wife secured a divorce from him. Since that

time he has eked out a miserable existence, spending the most of his time in jail as a result of

petty misdemeanors committed by him in his efforts to raise money wherewith to purchase liquor.

On April 13, after being released from the County Jail, where he had served a term for obtaining

money under false pretenses, he was sent to the County Hospital, a mental and physical wreck.

He remained at the hospital up to the time of his death.

The remains were taken to Garrett's undertaking parlors, from where the funeral will be held tomorrow

morning at 9 o'clock under the direction of a son and brother of deceased. Interment will be in the

Catholic Cemetery.
