- Education: 1936-1944; Education in Les Aldudes was conducted by the priests. One priest recognized his potential and pushed him very hard to study. He would go to sleep on many nights with a book in his hand. When his aunt Catherine Harriet offered to pay for his education at a school in St. Jean Pied de Port, he refused because he was already burned out from studying.
- Military: 1950-1952; French Army Paratrooper.
He made 26 jumps while on duty as a paratrooper.
- Immigration: 1953, Buffalo, Wyoming; He was sponsored to come to America by his mother's first cousin Catherine Marton who owned a sheep ranch in Buffalo, Wyoming. He came with another cousin Domingo Martiarena and the two along with the Marton sons, Charles and John, herded sheep on the Marton Ranch. He said that the winters were very cold there and he was anxious to move to a warmer climate.
- Occupation: 1954-1956, Los Angeles, California; Carpenter: After two years in Wyoming, he headed to California where he learned the carpentry trade. He did scaffolding with the Aphessetche brothers and general carpentry with the Nielson brothers. He claimed to have helped construct the Capital Records building and the KTLA radio tower.
- Occupation: 1957-1963, Buena Park, California; After his marriage to Grace Biscay, he went to work for the Orange County Food Service business. He drove a small lunch truck around to various businesses. He was one of the first employees hired by this company which is a multi-million dollar company today.
- Occupation: 1963-1970; They leased the Centro Basco Hotel in Chino from Ben & Melanie Sallaberry and eventually sold the business to Peyo and Monique Berterretche
- Occupation: 1971-1972; They built a building on Central Ave in Chino to operate a sausage making plant and retail meat store called Basque Brand Sausage.
- Occupation: 1973-1976; They formed a partnership with Henri Arrambide of Lasse to operate a restaurant in Montclair. They called it The Basque and Henri ran the bar, Jean Baptiste the kitchen and Grace was the hostess. The large banquet room in the back was the site of many large Basque parties and weddings.
- Occupation: 1977-1982; He returned to work for Orange County Food Service Co. to operate one of their larger lunch wagons. He enjoyed making specials at home at night and selling them the next day to the employees of the various companies he visited. His customers nicknamed him "Frenchy".
