- During World War II, he was struck by scrapnel that removed part of his face. He was originally in a hospital in Marseille and later was transferred to a special hospital in Paris until he died in 1949. He was shown in this pictoral article in the French magazine, Le Monde Illustre. The article featured the hospital in Paris and the work being done there to help reconstruct the faces of individuals who were injured during the War.
