Agnes was 16 when she came to the U.S. and said they put her in a 5th. Grade class to learn English, but she dropped out from the humiliation. She probably couldn?t fit into the ?children?s? desk ! She also told me that she was one of the first women to get to drive in Chino and the other Basque women looked down it. Bert encouraged it she said. They were a great pair. Of all the Newman siblings, Bert chose to quit school at 8th grade and take on the care of the Newman ranch in the Chino Hills. The other siblings all went to Pomona colleges. He fell in love with the Newman maid, Agnes, married her, and raised our mother, Genevieve, out on the ranch. They moved to their D street home in the mid 40?s. Agnes developed angina and other heart problems and she died at 54 in that home. He never remarried and lived to the ripe old age of 94.
