In 1940, he played in the All Star game, primarily being selected for his fielding talents. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates and played with them from 1941 through 1946. In 1944, he was again named to the All Star team for the National League. He was inducted into the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame in 1996. During his major league career he batted .243 with 28 home runs and 269 RBIs.
